AED- From the national organization:
AED functions both as an Honor Society and a Service Organization.
The object of this society shall be:
(a) To encourage excellence in scholarship.
(b) To stimulate an appreciation of the importance of health preprofessional education.
(c) To promote cooperation and contact between professional and preprofessional students
and educators.
(d) To bind together students with similar interests.
(e) To use its knowledge for the benefit of health organizations, charities, and the
community.
AED- Anyone is welcome to participate but national members of the organization must meet the following criteria:
  • Membership is open to students currently enrolled in chosen health professions, including careers in medicine (allopathic and osteopathic), dentistry, optometry, podiatry, veterinary medicine, and other health care professions requiring post-baccalaureate study leading to an advanced degree.
  • Potential members must have completed at least 3 semesters or 5 quarters of health preprofessional studies work with an overall cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.00) and also with a cumulative GPA of 3.30 in the sciences – biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
Affiliate membership:
  • Students who are not eligible for national membership due to grades or student tenure may be invited to become affiliate members of their school’s chapter and are expected to apply for national membership upon becoming eligible.
  • Affiliate members do not enjoy full membership privileges: they may not vote, apply for scholarships, hold officer status, or wear AED insignia.
